Here at Just Breve, we receive many emails and calls from people wanting an ITIN ASAP for various reasons.
Pre Covid the timelines, at the most, were 6 to 11 weeks for processing and receipt of the paperwork. However, since the Covid pandemic in 2020, the IRS has fallen behind across all processing units. This delay, has not gone away and is a continual ongoing situation.
How long does it take to obtain an ITIN from outside the USA?
Current timelines for obtaining an ITIN are 3 months for processing plus 4 weeks for the paperwork to arrive (this may be longer in some countries where there are also local postal issues due to Covid).
This timeline is actually faster than it was in 2020 and 2021, where it was taking approximately 6 months.
Why the long delays?
The IRS has a continual backlog of applications and tax returns for processing. Due to staff shortages and absences (like other organisations across the globe), they have administrative issues and ongoing delays.
Separately, as of now (July 2022), they are still processing their busy season (April 2022). Once past this busy date, they may speed up, but nothing is guaranteed.
Can you check on the status of the application?
Yes as certified acceptance agent for ITIN applications, Just Breve is able to call them and check. However, we will only do so, after 2 months have passed. This is due to the delays. All clients can email anytime and ask for an update. we will advise current status at the ITIN unit based on current information. This may mean, we advise that we won't call until a certain date (e.g. if they are still fairly behind from when your application was submitted to them).
Do you advise once the ITIN as been issued?
Yes of course! We notify all clients once paperwork has arrived to us. You as the applicant will also receive a copy of the paperwork (assignment notice).
