2018 ITIN Renewals

2018 ITIN Renewals

ITIN Renewal Process - follow these steps

Due to recent changes in tax law, some individuals who have an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number or ITIN, will be required to renew their ITIN for the first time.

Do I need to renew my ITIN?

You will need to renew your ITIN if one of the following applies to you (no action is needed by ITIN holders if they do not need to file a tax return in 2018.) The renewal process for 2018 is starting now:

  • The renewal process started in 2016 and if the middle digits of your ITIN were 78 or 79, they expired at the end of 2016: The IRS will have mailed a Letter 5821 to you if you were affected by this change. The letter explained how to renew your ITIN.

  • As of now, if the middle digits of your ITIN are 70, 71, 72 or 80, they will expire at the end of 2017. A rolling schedule is in place and in the coming years, the IRS is expected to announce other groups of taxpayers who will be affected.

  • If your ITIN hasn’t been used at least ONCE on a tax return in the last three years, it will expire on December 31st. This means that if you did not use your ITIN on a return at least once for tax years 2014, 2015, or 2016, your ITIN will expire at the end of 2017.

  • In addition, dependents without a date of U.S. entry on their passports from countries other than Mexico or Canada will need to prove residency before an ITIN can be issued.

To make this renewal process easier, the IRS is offering a family option for ITIN renewal. If your ITIN has the middle digits as listed above and you receive a renewal letter from the IRS, you can choose to renew your family at the same time. Family members include: the tax filer, spouse and dependents.

Renewal Rolling Schedule:

  • ITINs issued before 2008 will remain in effect until January 1, 2017

  • ITINs issued in 2008 will remain in effect until January 1, 2018

  • ITINs issued in 2009 or 2010 will remain in effect until January 1, 2019

  • ITINs issued in 2011 or 2012 will remain in effect until January 1, 2020

How do I renew my ITIN?

The process is fairly simple - you need to complete a Form W-7 Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. No tax return is required for a renewal application.

The application including all required original documents (e.g., passport) must be mailed to Internal Revenue Service, ITIN Operation, P.O. Box 149342, Austin, TX 78714-9342.

The anticipated time that the IRS will take to renew or issue an ITIN outside of peak processing times (between January and April) has generally been about six weeks. However, due to the renewal process, the IRS have said that as they would expect a high volume of renewals for expiring ITINs, there could be a much longer waiting period (9 to 11 weeks if you live outside the U.S.).

Any original documents or certified copies submitted in support of an ITIN application are supposed to be returned within 60 days. Taxpayers who do not receive their original and certified documents within 60 days of mailing them to the IRS may call 1-800-908-9982 to check on their documents.
