How to get an ITIN number from the UK

Obtaining an ITIN from Abroad? We'll show you how to get an ITIN number from the UK.

An ITIN number is a number issued by the IRS ITIN Office in Austin, Texas U.S.A.

Individuals requesting an ITIN must show evidence of a Federal tax need for an ITIN, meaning they have a requirement to file a U.S. Federal tax return (i.e. Form 1040NR), or are required to provide an ITIN to a third party to enable the filing of information reports that are required by law (“Exceptions” to return filing) during the current year.

If the individual does not have a requirement to file a U.S. Federal tax return, and has not been required to provide an ITIN to a third party for IRS information reporting, they would not be eligible for an ITIN.

If the individual does not have a requirement to file a U.S. Federal tax return, and has not been required to provide an ITIN to a third party for IRS information reporting, they would not be eligible for an ITIN.

Details of Exceptions can be found here within the Form W-7 instructions - Exceptions

Applying for an ITIN is easy when using a Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA). The CAA will prepare the Form W-7 and review all identity documents. The will then prepare Form W-7 (COA) and submit this along with the copy identity documents, U.S. tax return (if applicable) and any supporting documents to the ITIN Office.

ITINs normally take 9 to 11 weeks to be processed and sent to anyone living abroad.
